Martinez Tree Removal Permit, California:

  • Martinez is a city in Contra Costa County,  and the City of Martinez tree removal permits are managed by the city’s planning department.
  • Unincorporated Areas: While the city limits are in the county, the surrounding area includes “unincorporated areas” such as Alhambra Valley, Franklin Canyon,  Vine Hill, and Mountain View, which are also within Contra Costa County but not part of the city proper. Protected Trees: All oak trees and indigenous trees measuring 12 inches or more in diameter, measured four and one-half feet from grade on PRIVATE property.

  • All trees on PUBLIC or UNDEVELOPED property that are over 24″ in diameter or any multi-stemmed tree where the sum of the individual trunks measure 24 inches or more in diameter measured four and one-half feet from grade (see ordinance here for more)

How to apply for a tree removal permit:

Submittal Requirements:

  • Permit Application: Click here for the Standard Application Form for tree removals.
  • Site Plan: Provide a plan showing the location of the tree to be removed and the quantity and species of trees to be planted in exchange for the removal of a protected tree. 
  • Arborist Report: An official report by a certified arborist required to assess the tree’s health or to justify its removal (e.g., if it is hazardous).
  • Site Photos: Pictures of the trees and site. Include any visible damage.
