Walnut Creek Tree Removal Permit, California:

  • Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County.  Walnut Creek’s tree removal permits are managed by the Walnut Creek Public Works Department.
  • Unincorporated Areas: While the city limits are in the county, the surrounding area includes unincorporated areas, such as North Gate, San Miguel, Saranap, and parts of Tice Valley, which are also within Contra Costa County but not part of the city proper. See the  Contra Costa County Unincorporated Tree Permit Requirements for unincorporated properties.

Protected Trees:

  • All trees (dead or alive, public or private) located within city limits. Trees must be 9 inches in diameter or 28 inches in circumference, or larger, when measured at 4 1/2 feet above natural grade. If a tree has multiple trunks, there must be an aggregate of 40 inches in circumference of all trunks when measured at 4 1/2 feet above natural grade.

You do NOT need a permit if:

  • The tree is less than 9 inches in diameter (measured 4.5 feet above the ground)
  • The reason for removal is only due to leaves or needles (not a valid reason for removal).

  • Permit Fee: Pay the $85 permit fee to the City of Walnut Creek.
  • Arborist Report: Before approval, the City arborist will visit the site to evaluate the trees. They will evaluate to verify the tree qualifies for removal. If a tree is dead or dying and you are applying for a tree removal permit, an arborist report may be requested to formally document the cause of death or poor condition. Quality Tree Care can assist with the Arborist Report, provided we are removing the tree.
