Protected Trees

  • All trees located on public property or in the public right-of-way.
  • Native oaks, bay laurels, madrones, and buckeyes.
  • Trees that hold aesthetic, cultural, historic, or habitat value.
  • Trees originally approved as part of a development’s official landscape plan.
Exemptions
You generally do not need a permit to remove non-protected trees on residential property. Furthermore, if a tree is situated on a public right-of-way and the Public Works Superintendent officially declares it an immediate public safety hazard, a permit is not required. Emergency removals are also permitted without prior approval if the tree poses an immediate threat to life or property.

    • Arborist Report: An official report by a certified arborist required to assess the tree’s health or to justify its removal (e.g., if it is hazardous).
    • Site Photos: Pictures of the trees and site. Include any visible damage.
