Protected Trees:
- Any tree with a single trunk or multiple trunks with a diameter of 6″ or greater at 4.5 feet above the ground requires a permit for removal on private or public property. (Reference Chapter 15.70.020 of the Clayton Municipal Code)
How to apply for a tree removal permit:
Before you begin, collect all required documents:
- Site Plan & Details: You will need to provide a site plan showing the tree’s location, species, size, and the specific reason for removal.
- Arborist Report: An official report by a certified arborist may be required to assess the tree’s health or to justify its removal (e.g., if it is hazardous).
- HOA Approval: If your property is governed by an active Homeowners’ Association (HOA), you must typically provide written authorization from the HOA before the city will approve the permit.
- Permit Fee: The tree removal permit fee is $47 per tree.

The fee is $166, with a refundable cash bond deposit of $ 1,000. Make check payable to the City of Clayton.
